Baked beans in NZ are a breakfast staple. If we’re honest, I’m sure we’ll admit to it sometimes being what is for lunch or dinner too! This brings back memories from my uni days for sure!

Still one of my favourite quick and easy comfort foods, these rustic homemade baked beans up the ante and are super nourishing and satisfying.

Did you know that population studies have shown those who eat beans have a lower risk of bowel cancer? Beans are high in soluble fibre which is amazing for gut health, but many store-bought baked beans are very high in sugar and salt. These homemade beans are lower in both making them perfect for all ages, even young children. You may want to decrease the spices if you’re making them for the kids though.

Slightly sweet. Slightly salty. A little bit smokey. You’ll never buy store-bought baked beans again! Pair them with your favourite grainy toast and you’ve got a filling breakfast, lunch or dinner in 20 minutes flat.
