Natural Support for Broken Bones

A broken bone is one of those times where conventional care and holistic support work beautifully together.

As an ER nurse, broken bones are a large percentage of the kiddos we see, and proper alignment and immobilisation is absolutely essential for optimal healing. I always say, “the cast holds the bone in place, but nutrition and lifestyle determine how well it heals.” There’s a lot you can do to proactively support faster, stronger healing.

always prioritise

  • Assessment and imaging (to confirm fracture type)

  • Proper setting and alignment

  • Cast, splint or immobilisation

  • Follow-up care

This prevents complications like poor healing or misalignment.

the 3 layers of holistic support: nutrition, inflammation support, and tissue repair

Nutrition: the foundation
Bones are living tissue and need raw materials. Key nutrients that support bone remodelling include:

  • Calcium (bone structure)

  • Vitamin D3 (helps absorb calcium) + K2

  • Vitamin C (collagen formation)

  • Protein (tissue repair)

  • Magnesium + zinc (bone mineralisation)

inflammation support and balance (not elimination)

Inflammation is part of healing - don’t suppress it completely. Be cautious with frequent use of ibuprofen, as it may slow bone healing if overused. (PMID: 39319252).

Omega-3
Omega-3 supports calcium’s role in bone strengthening, and studies have found that higher intake may be associated with higher bone density. Omega-3 also helps reduce inflammation by blocking cytokine release, which can reduce pain and discomfort during fracture recovery. EPA is the primary anti-inflammatory component of omega-3.

Turmeric
Turmeric has well-documented anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects and has also been found to support bone fracture healing. A pinch in soups, teas, curries, or a quality supplement (standardised to curcumin) may help support recovery and reduce symptoms.

natural pain support (topical support around, not on the break)

  • Arnica montana: helps bruising and swelling. Can be used as a cream or gel (not on broken skin).

  • Comfrey (Symphytum officinale): often referred to as “knitbone.” Some clinical research supports topical application for reducing pain and inflammation. PMID: 22359388

  • Nature Profen™ Kids (Dr Green Life)

  • Rescuer Kids Oil Roller (doTERRA)

medicated pain support

Genexa Pain & Fever contains acetaminophen (paracetamol) without unnecessary additives. Use for acute pain as needed, while supporting glutathione pathways appropriately.
